The third chakra is a sunny bright yellow in color. Its element is fire, and it is housed in the solar plexus. It resonates on the musical scale with the note "e". When the third chakra is engaged with another, sparks fly. We've met our match. It has to do with will, personal power, the warrior aspect, commitment, and guts. It's your ability to go against the grain, to do what's right in your heart, to not go along with the crowd, the family, the corporation, the culture, or the masses. It's your independence and your ego. Ego has developed a negative reputation, but we need some ego to survive in the world. This way we take self-responsibility and don't become victims. This chakra is the part of us that knows that it's up to us to change. While the second chakra has to do with willingness to change, the third chakra has to do with taking the necessary action to create change. Our will takes us forward into positive action. When we say, "I will prepare my class," or "I will rehearse my choreography," we move into the field of action. While the second chakra is connected to the right to feel, the third chakra links us to the right to have.
We feel conflict in this chakra. The knots we that churn in our stomach or the sense of dread we feel before a confrontation... these are the sensations of the chords of the third chakra. They are giving you a powerful message. If someone makes you sick, pay attention. Gut feelings are accurate. So are first impressions.
A sense of humor, personal power, responsibility, self-control, inner discipline and optimism are all connected to this energy center. In Kundalini Yoga the third chakra corresponds to the positive mind. This part of the mind shows you the up side, benefits, and possibilities in a situation. Dancers who are autonomous, who warm themselves up, practice their choreography, and remember and apply their corrections are reflecting a healthy third chakra. They can work toward a goal and achieve it. They're not afraid of making mistakes. They are self motivated.
Self- doubt and low self-esteem are demons of the third chakra. Suffering in silence, staying in unhealthy situations, being manipulated or manipulating to get your way, and one-upmanship are examples of problems in this area. When we know that we deserve to be treated well, we behave differently. Sadly, many dancers don't feel they deserve basic respect and become accustomed to poor treatment or even abuse.
How do we heal the third chakra? Writer and psychic Sonia Choquette explains that we need to create "balanced sovereignty." According to her, the third chakra says, "I decide." I decide how I'm going to spend my time, doing what, and with who." Setting goals, taking steps towards them, keeping your focus, being proactive, and creating what you want keeps this energy center spinning brightly. Going after your dreams and creating success, accomplishment, and victory put us on track and in our power.
